Matera is located in the southeastern part of Basilicata. The province of Matera faces East on the Ionian Sea, bordered to the North by the Puglia (Bari and province of Taranto), on the West by the province of Potenza, South to Calabria (province of Cosenza). The city of Matera is 401 meters above sea level and is developed on two hollows separated by a rock where lies the oldest part of the city called the stone, which is dominated by the beautiful Cathedral. The city is known worldwide for historians Sassi, UNESCO recognized in 1993 (first site of southern Italy to receive such recognition). Matera with its places of interest, popular traditions and different events held throughout the year, has a rather extensive and varied cultural offer. The city also adheres to the Association, city of art and culture and was the first city in the world to be recognized cultural landscape.
