The regional reserve San Giuliano is a protected natural area of Basilicata, established in 2000. The history of regional reserve San Giuliano is linked to the birth of the homonymous artificial created for irrigation from the barrage Bradano River. In 1989 the WWF Italy has obtained, through agreement with the consortium of reclamation of Bradano and Metaponto, the local dealer, wildlife management, establishing an oasis. Since 1991 the section of the ravine of Bradano which is downstream of the reservoir has become part of the Park of the Murgia Matera. Also the region of Basilicata, in order to strengthen measures to protect, established in 2000 a single nature reserve managed by the province of Matera. It was declared by the Ministry of environment SIC area (site of Community interest) and SPA (special protection area).
