The Costa Viola is the name by which you identify a geographic area of the province of Reggio Calabria, just north of the capital, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Strait of Messina. The coastline, squeezed between the sea and the mountains, is dominated by high and jagged ravines as well as graceful and evocative coastal as the "grotta dello Sparviero". From Mount Sant'Elia you can enjoy a superb view against the backdrop of the Aeolian Islands and the two active volcanoes Etna and Stromboli. The coastal road crosses the slopes covered by Mediterranean scrub. The entire territory is also characterized by terraced vineyards overlooking the sea. The beaches and the various coasts are Rocky, sometimes sandy and gravelly at times, dominated by ridges of Aspromonte and Monte Poro, that plunge directly into the sea. The sea bottom is similar to those with a tropical ecosystem still intact. Recently were discovered near the coast of Scilla, rare black coral colonies while those of Palms, near Cape Baba, as many white coral colonies. Opposite shores of the Tonnara di Palmi, is the characteristic "Scoglio dell'ulivo", so named for the spontaneous growth of an olive tree.
