The Riviera dei Gelsomini (or Jasmine Coast) is the name by which you identify a coastal area of the province of Reggio Calabria bathed by Ionian Sea. The Riviera takes its name from the typical cultivation of jasmine, beautiful and delicate but also sturdy and climbing, spread throughout the province reggina but especially here, between punta Stilo and capo Spartivento. The flowers were collected from women (called gelsominaie) and sold by weight, and exported to France to prepare perfumes. The cultivation was introduced in 1928 by the experimental station for citrus essential oils and derivatives industries based in Reggio Calabria. The Riviera is dominated by hills of different conformation. The mountainous part is covered with forests in which prevails the beech, Holm oak, chestnut, and the typical Mediterranean vegetation. Descending towards the Hill-plain prevailing cultivation are olive groves, vineyards and orchards, in the flat part are citrus groves and partly the cultivation of bergamot.
