Verbania was part of the municipality of Novara, but now is a provincial capital of Piedmont region. The province whose capital is called Verbano-Cusio-Ossola. Is located on the western shore of Lake Maggiore in 197 metres above sea level. It is composed of two centers: Intra and Pallanza and in the latter there is the municipal seat. The town sits on a headland shaped like upside-down triangle in the middle of Lake Maggiore which marks the northern end of the Borromeo Gulf, where the mouth of the Toce, on which face Pallanza and Suna. On the southwestern side lie the towns of Pallanza and Suna, while to the Northeast, separated by the river San Bernardino, lies the village of Intra. The area is surrounded by mountains: Red Mountain to the East and to the North the rugged mountain area where the Val Grande National Park and where the mount Zeda (2156 m a.s.l.) and lace Marona (2051 m a.s.l.). Another nature reserve, the natural reserve of Fondotoce, is located just outside the city, at the confluence of the Toce River into Lake Maggiore.
