The OASIS Alento River is a nature reserve because of its characteristics of biodiversity was recognised in 1992 by the European Community, as the SIC AREA (site of Community importance). The area extends to 3024 acres, following the path of the Alento River and its tributaries, in the southern portion of the province of Salerno, partly within the National Park of Cilento and Vallo di Diano and partly on the border. The SIC area of the river Alento, despite not having a substantial extension, includes different habitats: a Lake, three forest types: maquis, deciduous mixed forest heliophilous, gallery forest along the banks of the river; replacement abandoned agricultural areas, scrub or grassland steppes, wetlands covered with reeds, areas planted with vines, olives and other fruit trees. It is therefore an area from the point of view of biodiversity.
