Agro Pontino is the name of the territory, once covered by swamps and now reclaimed, which corresponds to an alluvial plain largely bounded on the West and South by the Tyrrhenian Sea, on the East by the early Apennine foothills of the monti Lepini and Ausoni, North of the middle reaches of the river Astura and the first reliefs of the Alban hills. The etymology of the term pontino is a question much debated. Probably comes from the ancient city of Suessa Pometia volscian Latin before then, cited by some Roman historians and submitted by Tarquinius superbus, from which perhaps the expression Pometinum reported at the site; or both are derived from the noun Pontus, sea or water. The adjective pontino is often improperly used, especially in journalistic language, in reference to all municipalities in the province of Latina, although not directly relevant to the Pontine marshes.
