The island of San Pietro is one of the two main islands of the archipelago of Sulcis, located off the Sulcis peninsula in the southwestern part of Sardinia. Has an area of 51 km ² (sixth Italian island) and about 6500 inhabitants mostly concentrated in the town of Carloforte, the only town of the island. Along the Western and northern coasts are some caves, creeks, cliffs and natural pools with several small beaches. The West Coast is producing cliffs overlooking the sea and is dominated by the lighthouse and beacon of Capo Sandalo. The East Coast, on which lies the port of Carloforte, is low, flat and Sandy. Off the northeast coast there are two small islands, belonging to the municipality of Carloforte territory; the tiny island of rats and the widest flat island. On the latter, larger, are those who were the most important Sardinian tonnara buildings, now turned into a residential and tourist village.
