The Sulcis Archipelago (or Sulcitano) is located a short distance from the coast of Sardinia in the south-west area in the province of Carbonia-Iglesias. In some centers of these islands we speak the tabarchino, a Ligurian idiom recognized and protected by sardinian regional legislation, while in the remaining part the Sardinian Campidanese. It is a pegliese community that had moved in the 16th century to the island of Tabarca in present-day Tunisia, and then in 1738 and 1770 passed precisely in the Sulcis archipelago in the municipalities of Carloforte and Calasetta. The third center of the archipelago, as well as the most populous (with almost 12000 inhabitants), is Sant'Antioco, founded where the ancient Phoenician city of Solki stood. The archipelago includes two main islands, the island of Sant'Antioco and the island of San Pietro. Also belonging to the archipelago are some smaller islets of which the only inhabited is the island Piana, the other islets are the island of Toro, the island of Vacca, the island of Corno and the island of Ratti.
