Syracuse is located in a flat area in a Cove on the southeast coast of Sicily. Syracuse, along with the necropolis of Pantalica, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2005, already defined by Cicero as "the largest and most beautiful of all the Greek cities". It is the fourth most populous city in Sicily. The city develops in part on the headland-island of Ortigia and partly on land. The conformation of the coast determines the wide Bay of Grand Harbour, North of the island and on the South by the headland of Plemmirio. The fame of Syracuse is linked to its Greek history, when the polis commanded the seas undermining the power of the Carthaginians and Romans until it became the first major Western Empire. Of that era remain many testimonies, as the famous fountain of Arethusa, a source of fresh water in the heart of Ortigia, linked to the myth of Arethusa and Alpheus celebrated by many poets and writers and the Galermi Aqueduct.
