Grosseto, probably of Etruscan origin, is set in the famous and widely renowned Maremma, and is washed by the river Ombrone. Historically interesting are the walls surrounding the old town. Within walking distance lies the Church of St Francis, from the inside rather sober, with a wonderful crucifix which was attributed to a young Duccio di Buoninsegna. It was instead the less-known architect Sozzo by Rustichino realize the Duomo, at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, and the splendid decorations marked on the right portal of the Cathedral are likely the work of the Sienese architect. From an urban point of view, the city is one of the few provincial capitals (with Ferrara, Bergamo, Pisa), whose old town remained completely surrounded by the city walls, in the collection intact, which kept almost unchanged its appearance over the centuries.
