Description

The Avellana Fonte Monastery is a fascinating place. Steeped in art and history. The Avellana Fonte Monastery is located on the wooded slopes of Mount Catria (1701 meters) 700 meters above sea level. Its origins lie at the end of the 10th century, around 980, when some hermits chose to build the first cells of a hermitage that over the centuries will become the present monastery. The spirituality of these hermits was influenced by St. Romualdo of Ravenna, father of the Benedictine Congregation of Cameroon. He lived and operated between the 10th and 11th centuries in areas very close to Fonte Avellana, such as Sitria, Mount Petrano, and St. Vincent at the Furlo. In the medieval monastic tradition the study of herbs and their cultivation were traditional activities, sometimes indispensable for the very subsistence of the monastery that, for reasons of religious choice, was isolated from the social context. In all the monasteries there was a hortus sanitatis where medicinal plants were grown, under the direction of the monachus infirmarius, a monk with specific health functions, who, based on the information learned from the books and experience, had the task of caring for the sick, monks or pilgrims. Welcome: The monastic community practices welcoming to all; it is primarily aimed at those who wish to share their prayer and experience of the search for God. The days are filled with the choral prayer of the community (Lodi, Media Hour, Vespers and Eucharist). The hospitality of individuals and groups is practiced throughout the year excluding the months of January, February and November. Self-management is possible for groups of more than 10 people. The one-week courses will start at 5 p.m. on Monday and end at noon on Saturday.
